Designing a Living Space around Awkwardly Placed Windows

February 12, 2024

While natural light is essential to good home design, sometimes windows can be placed in awkward locations, making it challenging to create a functional and aesthetically pleasing living space. I am sharing some tips for designing a living space around awkwardly placed windows.

Embrace the Quirkiness

Instead of trying to hide or disguise an awkwardly placed window, consider embracing it as a unique feature of your living space. You can use curtains, blinds, or window treatments to draw attention to the window and make it a focal point of the room.

Create a Seating Nook

If your window is too narrow to accommodate a standard-sized piece of furniture, consider creating a seating nook designed to fit the space. You can use a bench or a built-in window seat to maximize the seating area.

Use Mirrors

Mirrors are a great way to make a room feel larger and brighter by reflecting light. If you have an awkwardly placed window that does not provide enough light, consider placing a mirror by the window to bounce light around the room.

Choose Furniture Wisely

When designing a living space around awkwardly placed windows, choosing furniture that complements the space and does not block the natural light is essential. Consider using low-profile furniture that does not obstruct the window or placing furniture at an angle to create a sense of flow and balance in the room.

Add Life With Plants

Plants add life and texture to a living space while helping purify the air. If an awkward window does not provide enough light for your plants, consider using low-light plants such as snake plants or pothos that can thrive in low-light conditions.

In conclusion, designing a living space around awkwardly placed windows can be challenging. Still, with creativity and careful planning, you can turn a problematic space into your home's unique and beautiful feature. By embracing your space's quirkiness, creating a seating nook, using mirrors, choosing furniture wisely, and adding plants, you can design a living space that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

Sunrooms connect indoor and outdoor areas. Due to their resilience, I recommend selecting durable outdoor materials such as teak, aluminum, and resin wicker when choosing lounge furniture for this space. Creating a cozy atmosphere will enhance your sunroom's beauty while protecting your furniture investment.
