Start with a great foundation color and add one or two supporting colors. Think cream, clay, caramel, coffee browns, and other earthy hues. Choosing a warmer background can create an inviting atmosphere. I encourage you to add color to your room for the easiest update. Try a chocolate brown throw, olive green pillows, a deep blue rug, rust colored lamps, or warm ochre accessories. These small doses of color will make your space much more interesting.
Instead of trying to match everything in your home, try coordinating instead. I love mixing and matching wood tones and metal hardware finishes. Try pairing traditional styles with more modern pieces. Use different furniture silhouettes and mix patterns. Adding layers of different textures will elevate a neutral base foundation. Think linen drapes, a boucle chair or ottoman, woven baskets, wood furniture, and a natural stone floor with a textured wool rug. Using a variety of materials prevents the room from feeling flat. It’s these little details that make a room feel collected and each piece special.
One of my favorite ways to introduce warmth this season is to shop at secondhand stores. Look for aged brass, pretty ceramics, silver serving ware, and imperfect or aged pieces that speak to your personality. Find vintage furniture, antique mirrors, and old artwork for a bargain on online marketplaces. I love to bring in darker wood tones for fall. Walnut, espresso, and dark oak feel right at home with autumn hues. If you have all the furniture pieces you need, try adding darker tones through picture frames or accent pieces that can easily be switched out as styles and seasons change.
When choosing home décor that will embrace the lived-in feel, choose things that mean something to you. Display your favorite photos, books you like to read, interesting travel souvenirs, heirloom pieces passed down in your family (or pieces you intend to pass down as an heirloom), handmade things, and tasteful collections. There is no need to fill every possible surface with trendy pieces bought from a big-box store unless that is what makes you happy. I like seeing select special pieces displayed where they will be highlighted for you and your family to enjoy.
I am 100% behind using heirloom pieces for everyday life. I see no reason to store them away all year and only bring them out on special occasions. Each day is a gift, so why not make every day feel special? Nothing is too precious, and if a piece breaks, most of the time it can be repaired, leaving you with a storied heirloom to share with your family. I think I would rather have my family remember using Great Grandma's China plates for dessert every Sunday rather than feeling the burden of having to store China used once a year, if that.
