How Window Treatments Make All The Difference

October 24, 2022

Without window treatments, a room never really feels complete. Different window treatments can soften corners, frame your view, and add that finished layer that genuinely transforms a space from plain to stunning. My go-to classic white or off-white curtains work in every room and hanging them properly will elevate your space.

Here are some of my favorite design rules for getting your curtains perfect for your home.

Hang them higher than you think

I always hang the rod as high as I can. A good rule of thumb is to hang them, if possible, about 2-3” below your ceiling or any molding or at least 4-6” above the windows frame.

Proper length curtains

Choosing the best length for your windows depends on the look you want to create. For a tailored look, I like to have the bottom of the curtains just kissing the floor. If your style is more casual, let curtains pool 1-2 inches on the floor for a relaxed look. To create a dramatic effect, let your curtains pool 3-4 inches on the floor.

Extend your rod beyond the window frame

To maximize the view, I always like to extend the curtain rod beyond the window by about 4-6” on each side. This allows you room to pull your curtains completely open without obstructing your view. This trick also gives the illusion of larger windows.

Stick to classic styles

There are so many different options out there but I always recommend classic styles. Pleating gives you an elevated look that pairs really well with drapery rings. Choosing an option that is lined will help curtain panels hang better and look more refined.

Add fullness

Doubling curtain panels will always look better than a skimpy single panel. You want to make sure your panels equal 2 to 2 1/2 times your window so they look beautiful both open and closed.

Create Layers

Shades can bring in beautiful textures to create layers in a room that would otherwise feel flat. I like to use roller shades to give privacy without blocking out all the natural light. These roller shades feel modern, almost disappearing so they are not competing with the rest of the room.

Sunrooms connect indoor and outdoor areas. Due to their resilience, I recommend selecting durable outdoor materials such as teak, aluminum, and resin wicker when choosing lounge furniture for this space. Creating a cozy atmosphere will enhance your sunroom's beauty while protecting your furniture investment.
