Do you have serious thoughts about revamping a bathroom in your home? It is no longer just a place for bathing and keeping the everyday essentials. Today I am sharing some astonishing facts on how the average family has inhabited the bathroom throughout the years. Enjoy (a little bit of my nerdy side) and consider these new trends and how they might help you develop a master bath that you’ve always dreamed of having.

There once was a time where the common household (mostly the lower/middle class) did not have more than one bathroom in their home. Early on before people had an eye for plumbing fixtures, powder rooms were usually all that many families had (which did not consist of a bathtub or a shower). It wasn’t until around the 1930s, that magazines began to market homes and plumbing more, due to multiple bathrooms being built in a single home. Fast forward to 2017 and the plumbing industry is still constantly growing as our society continues to change.

Bathrooms are no longer a place just for bathing; but they are where you relax, dress, and beautify yourself after a long day of work! The bathroom is where we go to dress up and freshen up before a ladies’ or a guys’ night out. Here are three of my favorite trends that have become popular this past year.

VINTAGE CHARM

 Choose a time era that you want to restore your bathroom to (say Art-Deco) and then begin looking at inspirational images. Once you know what you like, you may consider lurking for those vintage pieces at places like Restoration Hardware or even at a local auction. Look for pieces that will help balance out your other materials and colors. For example, the deep eggplant colored chair featured balances out all of those white shades in the lower portion of the room that it sits in. Once you’ve chosen that perfect center piece (say a claw-foot bathtub) along with all of those brassy fixtures, you can move onto the materials to complete the look. For an Art-Deco inspired bathroom search for black and white geometric floor and/ wall tiles.

PLAIN JANE

To create a spa-like bathroom at home, one of the best ways to achieve this look is by keeping it simple. Take advantage of natural lighting, placement of mirrors, and shades of white which also can all help to make the space feel larger. Built-in shelving is a huge craze right now and once installed, and can help the room to feel more open. Including natural and green earthy tones into the space can help to bring in the outdoors while giving your sophisticated bathroom a spa-like feel. It’s as simple as including a little greenery into your design by placing a plant here or there. Even including stone accents in the shower or on countertop surfaces can help you achieve this look.

MODERN FLAIR

Choosing the perfect pair of twin sinks and countertop or that new floating vanity that you’ve had your eye on for months will emphasize your desired look. Next you should focus on textures and materials. Contrasting dark and light materials and furniture pieces can help to bring in the dramatic effect that you’re going for. In the featured photo, the light countertop and wall color contrasting with the dark framed mirror, window frame and drapery all draw the eye in. To accomplish a sleek look you can find glossy cabinets and/or countertop finishes. You don’t want to make the room look too shiny, so mixing a glossy vanity with a rough inspired countertop (or vice versa) might hit the nail right on the head.
