Ask Abigail Amira - Modern Lake House

Lake houses make us think of late summer and spending screen-free time with the family. We love places with big windows and a killer lake view. You don't have to have a lake view to steal the laid-back style of a lake house property. Recently, one of our readers asked us how she can get that lake house look without it looking too boat theme-y. We suggest taking a page from modern lake houses and here is how to achieve it.

Comfortable Seating is one of our favorite things about these homes. Extra seating is ideal in summer homes for all your guests. If your home lacks the space for side chairs, trying tucking ottomans under your console tables or use them as a coffee table. We love the worn-in look of these IKEA chaises above.

You can incorporate the look of floor to ceiling drapery in almost any room. By bringing the curtain rods 4" to 6" (you can go even higher for taller ceilings) above your windows, you can add visual height to your room.

Most lake houses have smaller footprints and have to make every inch count. They often use beautiful built-ins to maximize their homes unique spaces. We love window seats that create a quiet spot to finish your summer reading list. Don't have a window seat? Adding a bench with some pillows against an empty wall in your home can create a similar spot.

Storage is very important in summer homes for obvious reasons. With a little organization, you too can have a Pin-worthy linen closet. Our favorite tip is storing sheets inside their pillow case for a tidy, clean appearance.

Make bedtime a calming retreat for your guests, children or even yourself! Keep rooms simple and be thoughtful with your colors. We love the different textures on the pillows, headboards and bedding.

Any good lake house should have an outdoor space that feels just as cozy as the indoors. We love how they took advantage of the glass rail system on this deck. It keeps everyone safe without blocking the stunning views, making this deck perfect for sitting outside with friends and families while sipping a cold drink.

You can use some or all of tips to bring in a modern lake house feel to your home. What is your favorite summer vacation spot? Let us know in the comment section below!
