Do y'all remember my beautiful Colonel Mustard settee I got from my local antique shop awhile back? When I bought it I had every intention of reupholstering it, but when I got it home my daughter and I loved it so much we kept it as is.
With the upcoming holidays, I knew it was time for a change. I was so inspired by Caitlin Wilson's navy burnside buffalo check fabric but I could not afford that beautiful fabric. I also wanted it in black. So, I made a trip to my local Hobby Lobby and I found not only black buffalo check fabric in the right scale, it was on sale!!
Here is how I recovered my bench in less than a day... I began removing the bottom fabric from my settee. The worst part of reupholstering something is the staples, there are always so many to remove. You can remove them with a fancy tool for removing furniture staples or do what I did and use a flat tip screw driver and a pliers. Luckily, there wasn't an overwhelming amount and I didn't even have to remove them all. Yay!
Next I removed the trimming and, you guessed it, even more staples...
Then I started working on removing the yellow velvet fabric. Around this point I started feeling guilty about reupholstering Colonel Mustard. The velvet was beautiful and so in right now, but it had an odor and some staining from its age. So I ignored the guilt and carried on.
Before I knew it my settee was naked and ready for a new outfit.
I used the old fabric piece as a template to cut out my new fabric piece. I was nervous about cutting it to short so I added about in inch to the length and width. Isn't the new fabric pretty??
Next, I aligned the fabric on my bench and stapled it into place. I used regular heavy duty staples and my trusty staple gun since I had them on hand. If I would have remembered that my husband bought me a wonderful air compressor kit that has the staple gun, I would have used that to make things easier.
I bought some black mini pom-pom trim as well from Hobby Lobby and I pinned it in place until I can get fabric glue or tiny staples to attach it properly.
Here is the new Colonel Mustard all styled up pretty. I tucked a clearance basket for shoes and winter accessories as well as my beautiful pumpkins underneath the bench. Then I put cozy new pillows on top. I love this black pillow I picked up from Target, I think it compliments the buffalo check fabric nicely.
I am so glad I pushed through the doubt and guilt because I love the way this settee turned out, it is just as I imagined it would be.
